THEME BASED LEARNING & CURRICULUM

At Saratoga independent School, all grade levels use yearly themes to guide their curriculum development.  The theme based units are a vehicle for teaching a range of skills and content by integrating curriculum areas around a topic.  While Math and Language Arts use specific programs, the yearly themes are still woven throughout.  The Bridges' Math program at SIS focuses on the growth of students' logical reasoning skills, spatial visualization, analysis, and abstract thought. Students master the four basic math operations, become proficient in the observation and analysis of data to solve problems, and build a strong foundation of algebraic thinking, which is introduced in first grade. Students learn to think and question like mathematicians.  The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project is the program used for Language Arts.  The mission of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project is to help young people become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers.  Saratoga Independent School also uses the Responsive Classroom model across all grade levels.  Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness.

OUR MISSION

At Saratoga Independent School, our mission is to empower students to be curious and confident learners, capable of critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and articulate expression.  As an inclusive, nurturing community that values diversity and mutual respect, we strive to cultivate in our students the knowledge, skills, work ethic, and character to lead purposeful, healthy lives.

Our Philosophy

Saratoga Independent School is for families who believe in the value of enduring and meaningful learning and want it for their children. Because children learn best through direct experiences, we fill our days with opportunities for students to explore, create, question, and interact with the world around them. Our approach to education weaves the skills of independent thinking and self-reliant learning, the transformation of curiosity into motivation, the development of intellectual courage, and theme-based curriculum into an unmatched educational experience from Prekindergarten through Middle School.
