(April 10, 2017 Saratoga Springs, New York)  At Saratoga Independent School, our motto is “We take care of ourselves, each other, our school, and our community.” Jump Rope for Heart is a fun event that helps our children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives.

One way our students have made a difference in the greater community is by supporting the American Heart Association through their annual Jump Rope For Heart campaign. We have participated in this program for eight years, and we do so because:

  • Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the nation’s #1 and #3 killers;
  • American Heart Association research is vital to conquering heart disease. Their research has led to CPR, defibrillators, pacemakers, clot-busting drugs, to name just a few;
  • Lack of physical activity among youth is growing at a troubling rate;
  • It is important that children understand the importance of physical activity and good nutrition.

Our children can help make a significant impact on an issue that affects nearly every family in our area. Additionally, through participation in this event they will be physically active, learn about heart health, have fun, and understand the importance of community service. As part of learning about heart-healthy life style, children have also accepted a heart healthy challenge.

Our Jump Rope for Heart Event will be held on April 13th from 1:00-2:15 (Rain date is April 24th).

  • Students will be participating injump rope games, activities, and challenges at different stations.
  • Children will share their knowledge about the heart and heart healthy living.
  • Healthy snacks and beverages will be served afterward.

  • Students who choose to may collect donations for the American Heart Association.
  • Students can ask friends and families to make a contribution to the American Heart Association.
  • We do not participate in prizes for donations. Our focus is on actions that will benefit others without personal gain.

Press Release: Director of School Announces Retirement

Saratoga Independent School

Director Announces Her Retirement

(March 9, 2017, Saratoga Springs, NY)  Felice Karlitz, Director of School at Saratoga Independent School has announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2017.

After 20 wonderful years at SIS, Felice Karlitz has informed the Board of Trustees that she has decided to retire as Director of School at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. For two decades, Felice has enriched the lives of countless students who have passed through SIS’s doors. SIS began in 1991 as a school with six kindergarten students in the basement of a church. Since then, SIS has grown into a vibrant and rigorous school. Or, as the New York State Association of Independent School described it during a prior accreditation process, SIS has become a “gem in its community.”

Starting immediately, the Board of Trustees will be forming a committee to conduct a search for a permanent Director of School who will continue the mission of SIS. The search process will likely last for a year, and possibly longer. The Board takes this responsibility very seriously and promises to conduct the search in a transparent and deliberative manner. Community participation in this process is important and will be welcomed.

For the immediate future, the Board of Trustees has voted to approve the hiring of Lisa Brown as the interim Director of School. Ms. Brown will begin as interim DOS immediately upon Felice’s retirement this June, and will continue to serve in the capacity during the search process and until a permanent DOS seated. Ms. Brown comes to the school with impressive independent school credentials. Most recently, Ms. Brown served as the Associate Head of School and a teacher at Doane Stuart. Since 1993, she also has served in various positions in Doane Stuart’s administration, including as the interim Head of School.  In addition, Ms. Brown has been a trustee of SIS for the past two years and has chaired the strategic planning committee, giving her familiarity with SIS and many of our families.
