Reading & Illustrating Stories (6 weeks, ages 7-14)
Children's book illustrator and art teacher, Donald Cook, presents a series
of art classes which combine hands-on drawing and painting-based illustration
workshops with a behind-the-scenes look at the world of children's book
illustration. Using familiar children's stories, students will learn to
interpret the text visually, develop characters, create rough sketches,
draw people and animals, express action and emotion, and learn basic techniques
for pencil and watercolor. Donald Cook heads the Art Department and offers
private classes at The Adirondack School of Northeastern NY, in Greenwich.
Cartoons for Fun (6 weeks, ages 8-14)
Lynee Jones presents a program for the aspiring cartoonist or just for
kids who like draw. Instruction begins with the basic human head with different
eyes and nose types. Students will develop cartoon characters such as the
mad scientist, the genius, the bode builder and many more. They
will learn the simple approach to creating animals that inhabit the farm,
the ocean, and the jungle. They will then explore the world of Superheroes.
Back on earth students will focus on creating cereal boxes with their own
special character, name and cereal flavors. And then, finally, they will
follow basic guidelines in learning the layout of a comic strip and putting
those characters to use.
Animals of Myth and Legend (6 weeks, ages 6-14)
Science Educator Joe Biss will be teaching students about a little known
science called Cryptozoology, which is the study of "hidden animals."
For hundreds of years people have reported experiences with creatures such
as Sea Monsters, Unicorns and the Abominable Snowman. Students will first
review some of the creatures that have been proven to exist like the Giant
Squid, Mountain Gorilla and the Okapi. Then students will review the evidence
for the existence of such beasts as Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster and Champy.
Then they will try to solve the mystery: could they possible exist?
