History of the School

2017 – SIS celebrates its 25th Anniversary Year.

The Board of Trustees approves plan for the completion of the new academic wing and for a new Middle School to open in the fall of 2019.

Director of School, Felice Karlitz, celebrates her 20th anniversary at SIS and announces her retirement for the end of the academic year.  Lisa Brown named as interim director of school.

SIS creates an Alumni Association.

2016 – In March, two Pre-K and two Kindergarten classes move into the new wing.  Ribbon cutting ceremony is held on May 11, 2016

Also in May 2016,   Saratoga Independent School completed a 5-year self- study and was re-accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) accreditation committee. The committee was very impressed with the progress and accomplishments of the school.

2015 –  Ground is broken on our new 20,000 sq. ft.  two-story academic wing.

2014 – Our school building reaches capacity.  A third primary class was added and a temporary classroom was constructed in the cafeteria. A Differentiation Support Teacher was added to the faculty.  Administration was expanded to include a part-time Director of Development and Finance Manager. Total enrollment reaches 124 students.

2013 – A fourth Pre-K class was added in January, accommodating eleven 3-year old and 4-year-old students.  Recognizing a need for more space and an overall vision for the campus, SIS retained the services of Collins-Scoville Architects and the L.A. Group to develop our Master Site Plan.  In September, an additional Kindergarten and  primary class were added.

2012 – A third Pre-K class and a Before School Care program were added.  New classroom space was constructed and three additional teachers were hired.  SIS hires a Director of Operations and names Felice Karlitz Director of School.

2011 – Saratoga Independent School earned New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) accreditation.  The NYSAIS accreditation process is a rigorous one.  It involves a two year introspective self study, a four day visit by a review committee, and a full NYSAIS review of the findings by the committee and the school.  We are proud to be a member of this association.

2010 – The East Wing of the Anderson Campus opened, providing space for computer, science and art labs, expansion for after school enrichment and third-party partnerships.  In 2010, Our Pre-K Wrap-Around program was added, offering families a safe, nurturing and enriching environment before or after the Pre-K class.

2006 – Saratoga Independent School began enrolling 3 and 4 year old students into the first multi-age preschool program in school history, located in the Arts Council on Broadway.

2004 – Construction of Phase I of the Anderson Campus was completed, providing our students 7,700 sq. ft. of room to learn and grow.

2003 – Saratoga Independent School undergoes its most extraordinary evolution to date, raising over $850,000 in land, gifts and pledges towards the construction of the Anderson Campus, in honor of Mrs. Gail Anderson and her late husband Willard T. Anderson.

1996 – Saratoga Independent School relocates to 8 Division Street to meet the growing demand for Kindergarten and Primary School students, and the school hires its first Office Administrator and Business Director.

1992 – the curriculum grew to include Physical Education, Art, Music and Spanish.

1991 – Saratoga Independent School opened its doors to six eager students in the lower level of the Trinity Methodist Church on Ballard Road in Gansevoort, NY. By the following school year, enrollment had doubled and full-time teachers were hired.




Over the past 25 years, Saratoga Independent School has steadily grown and changed to provide instruction in a safe and vibrant setting designed to develop children’s self-esteem, sense of competence, critical thinking skills and enthusiasm for learning in all developmental areas – intellectual, emotional, social and physical.
